Sheffield Back In New York, Different Borough

April 3, 2009

gary sheffield

gary sheffield will most likely hit his 500th homerun in a mets uniform (he currently has 499). after strangely being released from the tigers sheffield inked a one year deal with the new york mets. the tigers still owe gary sheffield $14 million, so the mets were able to pick him up for the league minimum of $400,000. the tigers will have to cover the other $13.6 million owed.

in my opinion the fact that the tigers owe him all that money and that the mets were able to come away with this deal barely coming out of pocket at all is the main reason the mets pulled the trigger on this deal. sheffield is 40 years old and past his prime, but he still had something left and will be worth more to the mets than they are paying for him.

Baseball Season Right Around The Corner

April 3, 2009

so, the 2009 baseball season starts in a few days. that means constant aggravation for me during the yankee season. it starts with me living in hollywood, and not new york anymore, so i either get to watch every 1 of 20 games on national tv, or i get the expensive baseball package from time warner, either way im losing.

the yankees season opener is against the orioles in baltimore on april 6th. the yankees will send newly acquired cc sabathia to the mound to open their season. their rotation right now looks like this : sabathia, burnett, wang, pettitte, and chamberlain.

i am predicting right now that the yankees win the world series this year. remember i said that when they do.

Manny Ramirez Re-Signs With Dodgers

March 4, 2009

manny ramirez

Manny Ramirez has re-signed with the los angeles dodgers. after rejected multiple offers manny signed with the dodgers for 2 years worth $45 million on march 4th.

early in the offseason ramirez received a lot of offers early including a rather generous offer by the new york yankees but rejected every offer hoping to hold out for maximum compensation. manny felt he was worth $25 million a year and wanted at least 3 years. with spring training underway it was uncertain where manny would end up.

it was said ramirez’ agent scott boras told him to wait till the regular season to see if a team got hit with an early injury or off to a slow start and might get manny the money he wanted. something must have changed their minds because manny ramirez has re-signed with the los angeles dodgers. he will report to spring training immediately.

A-Roid Scandal

February 7, 2009

alex rodriguez

alex rodriguez, who some believe to be the greatest player to play the game and is on pace to shatter the home run record currently owned by barry bonds, has become the latest player entangled in the great baseball steroid controversy. apparently in 2003, the same year he won the al mvp and the al home run title, alex rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids. this information is coming from four independent sources.

rodriguez was among 104 players who’s names appeared on a list of players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. a-rod is staying tight lipped about the revelations. when asked by a sports illustrated reporter about the findings rodriguez said “you’ll have to talk to the union.” when asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said “i’m not saying anything.”

what’s going to happen to a-rod is not a certainty however i believe he will continue to play for the yankees and go on to surpass barry bonds for the all time home run king, but will his name have an asterisk next to it in the record books?? that i can’t say.

just for the record, i never really like a-rod until the 2007 yankees season. i used to not be a fan of rodriguez and was resentful that the yankees picked him up for such a enormous amount of money, but a friend of mine really made a convincing argument for a-rod and i then became a fan. now that this has come to light i am not sure how i feel about him. i do still think he may be a world series curse, but then again you can say the yankees may be a world series curse since 2000.

we will continue to follow this story and if anything new comes to light, it will be posted here.

Pettitte Stays In New York

January 26, 2009

andy pettitte

andy pettitte signed a one year deal with the yankees worth $5.5 million. with incentives pettitte could earn $12 for the year. i am happy about this. i am a yankee fan and an andy pettitte fan, i don’t care that he is on the older side of professional life, or that he played with the astros for a little bit he is a yankee in my mind. i think he feels the same way, here is what he had to say “there was no other team ever brought into the equation. my mind never changed. I wanted to come back to the yankees, and in my mind, I was going to be back.”

pettitte turned down an offer from the yankees in the winter for one year worth $10.5 million. the reason he turned this down according to his agents was because it would be too much of a pay cut from the $16 million he earned each of the last two years. to me its interesting that now he would take $5.5 million with incentives. here is what he had to say on that. “i guess it does take a shot at your pride a little bit, but when you put all that aside, I wanted to play for the new york yankees. that was the bottom line. i wanted to be there and play in that new stadium.”

Yankees Sign Mark Teixeira

December 23, 2008

mark teixeira

the new york yankees made another huge pick up today. they went out and signed mark teixeira to a 8 year deal worth more than $170 million. teixeira who was also being courted by the red sox and the washington nationals decided to go with the most storied franchise in sports history, and who can blame him? however, this may now put a damper on the yankees chances or desires to make a go for manny ramirez who is looking for a big money deal over a 3 year period. the teixeira pick up is one of many the yankees have made this winter. in addition to teixeira the yankees made deals for cc sabathia and aj burnett as well as nick swisher. the yank’s also avoided arbitration with pitcher chien-ming wang by signing the 28 year old to a one year deal worth $5 million. wang, who was injured most of last year, has been a solid pitcher for the yankees and in 2006 led the league with 19 wins. the yankees obviously didn’t like the feeling of ending their season in august last year and are trying to make sure they have the best possible squad to get them back to october baseball; a place they know well.

Yankees may get Manny Ramirez

December 17, 2008

manny ramirez
manny ramirez

it is being reported that the original “yankee killer” may soon be a yankee. the new york daily news is reporting that the yankees are seriously interested in the services of the 36 year old outfielder. some upper level officials in the organization feel manny would be the perfect compliment to alex rodriguez, much the way he and david ortiz struck fear in the heart of every pitcher who faced the red sox. brian cashman is not too sure about manny ramirez but hal and hank steinbrenner are big manny fans. hank steinbrenner was quoted as saying “he’s one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game. he’s a free spirit, for sure, but he knows how to win…” the yankees are interested in a few other free agents but since the cabrera-cameron trade talks with the brewers has dried up i feel the yankees are looking to sign an outfielder more than a infielder (mark teixeira). where manny ends up could rely heavily on where teixeira lands. the two major leaguers are represented by scott boras and its probable manny will wait to see where teixeira winds up before making a decision on his future.

though no contract has been offered by the yankees some reports say the yankees would be willing to offer manny a 3 year deal totaling close to $75 million though they would rather sign him to a 2 year deal. manny was traded from boston to the dodgers in the middle of last season and led them to the national league championship series where they fell short to the phillies, who went on to win the world series. last year in the regular season manny batted .332 with 37 homers and 121 RBIs. in 8 post season games manny hit for an insane .520 with four homers and 10 RBIs

A.J. Burnett is a Yankee

December 12, 2008

aj burnett

the yankees have made another big move. to strengthen their rotation the bronx bombers went out and picked up a.j. burnett. burnett entered the free agency market after an 18 and 10 season with the toronto blue jays. it was unsure how much burnett would garner but he is laughing all the way to the bank right now. $82.5 million over 5 years… $16.5 million a year… $550,000 a start (in theory)… jeeze. the yankees rotation is looking real nice from where i sit. wang, cc, burnett, pettitte (maybe) and chamberlain (maybe). if pettitte doesn’t re-sign and chamberlain stays in the bullpen we still got hughes and kennedy. im cool with that. one last thing, i heard there could be a move made that would send melky cabrera to the brewers and bring mike cameron to the yanks… don’t know how i feel about that.

7 years, $161 million

December 10, 2008

cc sabathia

cc sabathia and the new york yankees have agreed on a 7 year deal totaling $161 million setting the new record for a pitcher. sabathia who didn’t take the yankees initial offer of 6 years, $140 million agreed to this deal after brian cashman left vegas and the winter meetings to fly to sabathia to meet with him in california. people are now saying cc doesn’t really want to play in new york, he’s just doing it for the money. he really wanted to play in california but the yankees made him a huge offer. my opinion ladies and gentlemen, that is the game here, you go after the best free agents on the market with the money they want. don’t blame the yankees, after all, in today’s game the agents set the market rate for their clients its no longer ownership setting the market for their players. all american professional sports started going downhill when the term client started outweighing the terms teammate or player.
anyway, the yankees got cc sabathia and now they are set on going after aj burnett. the yankees have extended an offer to aj burnett. the amount of money burnett would be getting has not yet become public however it is said that burnett’s agent is seeking something similar to to what carlos zambrano received from the cubs. that deal was for 5 years $91.5 million. burnett has also garnered interest from the braves who offered him a 4 year deal worth $60 million and also the red sox who have not yet offered burnett a deal but the two parties have met at the winter meetings in las vegas. now that the yankees have cc sabathia i am eager to see if they really make a strong move for burnett within the next few days. hopefully, if the yankees don’t get him the red sox don’t either.
